Zinnie
The Gallery of Palazzo Franzoni also has a collection of works of art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: canvases, watercolors, drawings and engravings. Among these is an engraving by Giorgio Morandi, signed and dated 1930 in pencil on the lower left margin, depicting a vase with flowers: a theme dear to the artist and presented several times and differently. The etching features a vase with light and dark vertical stripes, with a bunch of zinnias, a plant from North America and a symbol of simplicity.
GIORGIO MORANDI
Bologna, 1890-1964
In Bologna in 1907 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, attending the preparatory course, the common one from 1909 to 1910 and the special figure course from 1910 to 1913. The artistic references of his training that later marked his production were Cézanne, Henri Rousseau, Picasso and André Derain. In parallel, he developed an interest in the great Italian art of the past: Giotto, Masaccio and Paolo Uccello. He was one of the protagonists of Italian painting of the twentieth century and is considered one of the greatest world engravers of the last century. His painting can be defined as unique: you celebrate his still lifes in which the objects represented (bottles, vases, coffee pots …) are taken out of their functional context and analyzed in their pure essence.
