Nicknamed the Sarzana from his city of origin, he was one of the main exponents of the Genoese Baroque school. He trained in Genoa in the workshop of G.B. Paggi and in Rome, where he stayed from 1607 to 1616 and where he was a friend of Orazio Gentileschi and of the Genoese marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani, protector of Guido Reni. He also carried out his activity as a painter of the Republic of Genoa, making many official representations. His abundant artistic production, both sacred and profane, was characterized by a style always in balance between the naturalistic component with reference to Caravaggio and Gentileschi and the classicist current inspired by the works of Guido Reni.
